More about the 2014 e-Supplement that accompanies Legal Research: A Practical Guide & Self-Instructional Workbook (5th ed.)

The 2014 e-Supplement to the 5th edition has been written by Assistant Professor Lisa Lukasik and law librarian Caitlin Swift, based on the printed supplement written in 2008 by Amy Flanary-Smith, Ruth Ann McKinney, and Scott Childs. That printed supplement, in turn, was based on the earlier work of Philip Woods. The authors of the 5th edition are grateful for the contributions of each of these professionals and owe a special thanks to Professor Lukasik and Ms. Swift for the meticulous care they took in developing this up-to-date, completely current e-Supplement.

Faculty members who have used this workbook in the past will be pleased to know that nothing has changed that did not need to be changed. For example, the supplement retains the same problem-set that is in the print copy (a property dispute involving riparian rights). Similarly, we continue to focus on clear legal reasoning combined with wise decision-making as the root of all effective legal research.

But what has changed is important: the new e-Supplement is current as of August 2014 and includes the new features released late in September of 2014 for Lexis Advance. In addition, it teaches strategies for using WestlawNext, now the required platform for Westlaw, infused with ideas for how to retain the advantages of Westlaw Classic, which has now been retired.

The e-Supplement is the precursor to cutting-edge changes to follow in 2016-17 when a robustly innovative, e-book version of the workbook will be released, complete with helpful video vignettes and other online supplements and flexible curricular design.

It is strongly recommended that this e-Supplement be used in place of the print supplement that will accompany delivery of the workbook. The e-Supplement is downloadable and printable, and its content is copyright protected. Faculty can access the e-Supplement here, and adopting faculty are invited to share it with their students.
